St. George Pagon – North Corfu

Reading Time: 3 minutes

While the coasts of Corfu may be known for their clear turquoise waters and beautiful landscapes, there is another side to this island that holiday makers often miss.
Venture north inland into the hills and you will find a charming village called St. George Pagon – a place frozen in time where locals during the winter still make their living from farming and fishing. With its stunningly crystal-clear water, and unspoilt nature, St. George Pagon is a true hidden gem on Corfu. If you’re looking to enjoy the authentic Greek hospitality dive into frozen water off the beaten path, feel the nature within your body and a relaxing spirit all over your soul during your stay on this magical island, be sure to visit St. George Pagon! It is a family and relaxing place so leave the stress away and enjoy.

Location

It is located about 35 kilometres from Corfu Town (about 50 minutes by car). It is a community that emerged in the latter half of the 20th century as a result of the growth of tourism.

History

The church of Agios Georgios, the store and home of Tsibouvgi at the southern end of the beach (an 18th-century building), and the store of Tagos across from the church of Agios Georgios are the only extant structures (early 20th century). An ancient town that was devastated by landslides of an unknown date is still visible in the southern portion of the bay near the Tsibouvgi house, both above and below the water. The historic church of Agios Georgios is where the village gets its name.

Additionally, the same-named beach is nearby. It is a lovely beach with sand that is around two kilometers long. It is peaceful and safe, making it ideal for family vacations. Though its waters appear to be crystal clear, they can occasionally be bitterly cold (from where it got its name as the beach of Agios Georgios of the Ice). Families with young children love it because the water is quite shallow on the left side and suddenly deepens in the northern portion. The settlement of Afionas, which offers fantastic taverns and breathtaking views of the sunset, is located at the northern end of the cliff.

Even though the journey to the village is fairly hilly, it is worthwhile to trek because the view from the top is unmatched. The location is surrounded by cypress trees and lush olive groves. Many people believe the beach at Agios Georgios Pagon, in particular, to be the most stunning on the entire island. For its cleanliness and the caliber of the services it offers, it has received a Blue Flag. There are numerous eateries, cafes, hotels, and lodging options nearby.

If calm and leisure are what you’re seeking, this is the spot for you. As you leave the beach and ascend toward the village, you will undoubtedly pass a number of businesses selling tourist-related goods or other products for your vacation. Rentable umbrellas and sun loungers are available on the beach, but you may also engage in scuba diving and other water activities. Additionally, there are numerous watercraft (boats, pedalos, etc.) that you can use to explore the area or travel to Porto Timoni, a popular beach that is difficult to reach from land (with all that entails).

How to get there.

If you don’t have a car, you should take the green KTEL intercity bus from Eptanison Avenue in Corfu. The cost of a ticket for an adult is €3.60. However, a kid under the age of six rides free. The nearby resorts of Arillas and Agios Stefanos are two more.
